SOLAR STAGE is celebrating its 32nd anniversary season this year. Originally formed in 1976, our first venue was a small loft at Yonge and Richmond Streets in downtown Toronto.
In 1978, we adopted a lunchtime format replacing our evening productions with lunchtime ones and serving the downtown business core. In 1979, under sponsorship from Olympia & York Corporation, we moved into the prestigious First Canadian Place in downtown Toronto. A raw retail space was converted into an intimate and flexible theatre. During that time Solar Stage had six very successful seasons developing new Canadian work. In 1985, we were sponsored to open a second location in a new office complex in North Toronto, the Madison Centre. During the construction of the second location Olympia & York regrettably asked Solar Stage to vacate its venue in First Canadian Place. The company decided to put all of its energy into the new theatre in North Toronto. The company still continued to focus on original Canadian work.
In 1995 Solar Stage decided that we would better serve the community by producing Children's Theatre in our Madison Centre venue and were sponsored by Scotia Plaza to open another lunchtime theatre in the office towers in October of 1996. We produced over 14 shows a season in combination with our Children's Theatre and our Lunchtime Theatre for 4 years.
In 2000 downtown real estate became very expensive and Scotia Plaza asked that Solar Stage vacate their Lunchtime Theatre as they needed the retail space. Solar Stage then moved its base of operations back to North York and committed to doubling the programming of the children's theatre. Solar Stage has premiered and developed work by many Canadian Theatre professionals some of which include, Carol Bolt, Betty Jane Wylie, Danny Grossman, Ken Gass, Hrant Alianak, Neil Foster, Diane Stapley, Elliott Hayes, Ed Schroeter, Raymond Storey, Colleen Curan, Robert Latimer, Kent Staines, Caroline Russell King, David Warrack and Catherine McNally.
Solar Stage is a registered charitable organization, with professionally audited statements annually and receives funding and support from the Ontario Arts Council Endowment Fund.
